Sarah Ann Austin is a Raleigh based mixed media artist born in Flint, Michigan and received her BFA from The University of Michigan and her MFA in Studio Art at the University of Alabama, focusing in many forms of Visual Art, Photography, Sculpture, Book Arts and Papermaking. Sarah Ann’s technical and historical knowledge of traditional crafts is used in her everyday practice creating paper, prints, brushes, installations, and art objects that wonderfully capture the depth and many uses of natural resources. She has taught at universities and community centers since 2012. Teaching many visual Arts, including Darkroom Photography, Digital Art, Digital Photography, Large Format Film Photography, Papermaking, Bookmaking, Sewing, Team Building, Brushmaking, and Historical Photographic Processes. Working in studios across the Triangle and beyond Sarah Ann also offers both private and group instruction in her private studio.
Austin’s work has been exhibited in various group and solo exhibitions nationally, including the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Birmingham Museum of Art, Flint Institute of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Oklahoma Museum of Modern Art, Gadsden Museum of Art, Bradley University, University of Michigan, and more. Sarah Ann has received grants and fellowships from Penland School of Craft, Ohio Arts council, FotoFocus, Society for Photographic Education, AL Arts council, University of Michigan, University of Alabama, Greater Flint Arts Council, United Arts Council of Wake County and more.
